A media request in Minneapolis ...

From: Jeremy Olson

I am likewise doing a story on the AMA's consideration of gaming and the potential for addiction. I see an AP reporter already made a request to talk to someone about the issue, so I apologize for the redundancy. I expect this issue will garner considerable national media attention, so I may not be the last reporter making a request. If anyone is willing to share his or her experience, particularly from the Upper Midwest, please get in touch with me. My intent isn't to exploit someone's personal struggle, but rather to personal this issue and make it more understandable for readers.

Thanks for your consideration.

We have several OLGA and OLG-Anon members from the upper midwest. I suspect that some people will talk to you. I only grew up in that part of the country, and that was a long time ago...

He would like to talk to Liz too, if possible. I told him to send her a PM through the board.

Got it with your link Xandtar. Good article. As usual some of the comments are off. Thanks for responding Anna.

Sorry, I posted the link from the page I commented on. I guess that one only works if you're registered to comment?

Clicking on the link in

Clicking on the link in Reply #4 indicated that the article is no longer available. When I just did an advanced search for that article based on the part of the headline provided, it found one article for that same date, i.e., June 22, 2007. It showed the following:

Quote:

WHEN IT'S NO LONGER A GAME THE AMERICAN MEDICAL ASSOCIATION THIS WEEKEND WILL CONSIDER A PUSH TO CLASSIFY EXCESSIVE VIDEO-GAME PLAYING AS A PSYCHIATRIC DISORDER. IT LIKELY WON'T HAPPEN WITHOUT HEATED DEBATE. Six years ago, Elizabeth Woolley mourned the loss of her son to a self-inflicted gunshot wound and blamed the online computer game that consumed the final months of his life. The 21-year-old had spent as much as 12 hours a day playing a fantasy computer game alone in his apartment in Hudson, Wis. He appeared to be playing just minutes before his death in fall 2001. "This isn't just an online game. It's dangerous," Woolley said in 2002....

After that, there was a link to purchase the complete article, saying that it is 1,225 words. I did not bother to purchase it myself but, if anybody is interested, you need to do the following (note that using the long HTML link directly does not work for some reason) to get to that page: Click on the "archive search" link. In the new window that comes up, click on "Advanced Search". In the "For" line, type in "When it's no longer a game", including the double quotes. In the drop-down list beside that which likely shows "in ALL Text", select the "in Headline" option. Click the Search button.
