Hi, I just jointed OLGA today. I live near White Plains, Westchester County, NY. Any one knows psychiatrists specialized in computer gaming addiction in the area within an hour of drive? My 22 years old son really needs help. I'm also interest in the meetings and ways to bring my son to get help from this site and the meetings. Thanks.

Welcome to OLGA, Mphoenix. I wish I knew a good therapist or psychiatrist, I could've used one myself. The meeting in White Plains right now consists of two people, and of course your son is very welcome to attend. However, if he's not convinced yet that he needs help, might it be easier to get him to browse this site, first? Read people's stories and see if anything resonates? There are recovering gamers here close to his age who he might want to talk to.

Back when i was doing counseling for "my problems" no one had ever mentioned gaming addiction.

I was doing 8 hours a day, working and studying full time, getting 2 hours of sleep a night. this went on for months.

My therapists had these facts, but gaming addiction was just not a diagnosable illness.

Your son is welcome to come to the meeting if he so wishes.

I will warn you that addicts seem to have a very long rope before they realize that they truly need strong help, and then to take strong action.

We meet tonight in white plains at a star bucks, (i used my birthday free drink card, banana strawberry shake, it was very good).

Is this meeting still being held, and if so are they still on sundays? I'm going to be home for a day or two in NJ and would love to try and get some face to face time with other OLGA members over the few days I have off from school :)

We have a group that meetings in whiteplains every week, but no one is going to bethere this week, so I am seeing if we can get some people together for a meeting in the city.

Hi Hershel,

My son will be arriving from CA (college) and we have just learned he's in a bit of online gaming crisis right now. We live a distance from White Plains (about an hour away) but will bring him if the meeting is definitely taking place every week.

He'll be a counselor at a camp with no internet access (yay) Mon morning through Sat. evening so will be able to attend meetings if all works out.

Any advice for the meantime? I told him to seek counseling help on his campus today.

Whatever you do, do NOT allow him to go back to college until this issue has been dealt with, and fall semester this year is TOO SOON.

I will warn you to talk with the professional and find out they views on "behavioral addiction" if they have experience with gaming addiction and so forth. You will find that even many addiction therapists claim to have competence with addiction bu when you get into it with them they po po the "obsessive behavior", and don't advice a strong regimen of therapy.

What I am saying is, if he has a full blown gaming crisis, once a week with a mediocre social worker is not going to cut it.

Even without internet he can learn to spend weeks gaming, like I did. I know people who have spent 12 hours+ on tetras and other games. You need to understand that gamers get a "hit" off any kind of gaming, no matter how lousy. The second thing is, I have very little faith in "no internet environments" as most places have internet there or nearby "locked" or with some other deterrent. Addicts are desperate and resourceful. It's like trying to lock up a convict. very hard. and before you will never really know if they don't have computer access.

The third thing is, does he know he has a problem and is he willing to work towards fixing himself?

We have moving our computer gamer's meeting from our Whiteplains NY location to Tarrytown NY for this week in order to make the meeting more accessible for those coming in from upstate NY.

There are on-line chat meetings for parents on Thursday nights at 9pm EST, if you are interested in.

Meetings are still going on in Tarry Town if anyone is interested, we have three members thus far, myself, Operetta and Hirschel. We would love to talk to some newcomers.

Being that it is getting dark earlyer now, we should move out of the park to a indoor location.

The easiest way to do it is find another gamer from these areas.
However, you are very welcome to attend the meeting in Tarrytown. It's very easy to get to from Grand Central.

I just found this sight today. I also live on Long Island and wish there were meetings closeby to attend. My son is almost 14, and addicted to gaming. Today was one of those days when he did not get up to go to school because last night I took all his electronics away. I am at my wits end.

He is a very smart, sweet boy, who has many friends, but is falling to the prey.Becoming very unmotivated. Now he would rather stay in his room and game than spend time with family and friends. He is a true middle child, with a set of 16 yo identical twin brothers and a little sister, 10.

Not sure what to do. I would love to start a Long Island Meeting...anything to find help and support.

I don't know if Maryk still comes around from time to time however we do have a meeting tomorrow at 6 PM in Westchester. I understand that may be a bit far to travel. Metro North does have a stop in Tarrytown.

I would also encourage you to start a meeting in Long Island if you are up to it. All you need to do is post a public location that you are willing to commit to attending every week and someone will attend eventually. That is how meetings are started.
