I am a Bachelor of Psychology Honors student at the University of New England in Australia with an interest in online gaming addiction. I am conducting a research study and seeking partipants to complete an anonymous online questionnaire which takes approx 15mins. The questionnaire is accessible at http://tinyurl.com/UNENET2014 .
The research project: Internet Use, Coping, and Social Support in Adolescents and Adults. This project is being conducted as part of my Honours thesis in the School of Behavioural, Cognitive and Social Sciences, Psychology Department at the University of New England. This project has been approved by the Human Research Ethics Committee of the University of New England (Approval No HE14-127, Valid to 20/05/2015).
This research study Internet Use, Coping, and Social Support in Adolescents and Adults aims to find out more about people's experiences of using the Internet and how this affects their every-day life. The study will explore the relationship between a person's experiences of using the Internet, problems which may develop as a result of using the Internet excessively, how people cope with stressful events, and the types of social supports they have. The researchers hope to identify factors that help people cope with stressful events and how social support can enhance well-being.
The study involves completing an anonymous and confidential online questionnaire, which will take approximately 15-20 minutes. Participants aged 16 years of age and older are eligible to participate. The survey is accessible at the following online link http://tinyurl.com/UNENET2014 It is also available on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/UNENET2014 Feel free to contact me with any questions about this research by email at mmcnicol@myune.edu.au. You may also contact my supervisor. My Principal supervisor's name is Dr Einar Thorsteinsson and he can be contacted at ethorste@une.edu.au
Ms McNicol -
Are you seeking only subjects who identify as those who abuse/are addicted internet use? Or can those who are affected by the behaviors of these individuals also participate?

Hi AmyK thanks for your question. Anyone over 16 can participate and not neccesarily just those who are addicted to internet use, so yes family members/ those affected by someone's excessive use/addiction can participate too. We are hoping for a cross section of internet users to take part, ranging from those who use it excessively and with negative consequences to those who do not.
The questions are designed mainly for internet users. They are not designed for the family members who are affected by the excessive internet user or gaming addict in the family. Therefore a family member of a gamer answering the questions as first person would not benefit you in any way unless excessive gamer or excessive internet user himself answers them (unless of course as the questionnaire progresses there are specific questions for the family members of excessive internet users. I stopped looking into it after completing a few pages.)

Agrees with May Light.
It is also for those who are active in their addiction and not for those who no longer touch games (like me).

May Light and Tommi, people like you are the "control group". You should answer the survey.

I took the survey, it's well designed! I like the assessment of family support and Internet use!

Tommi and May Light, I am not just targeting excessive users/gamers and am hoping for a cross section of participants to take part. As Andrew Doan said, in other words, a 'control group' . This will be compared with the 'addicted users' who will score higher in some scores.

It may not be appropriate to ask you family members to participate - especially if they are abstaining from online activities, however it can give them an opportunity to reflect on their internet use/gaming activity and the impact it is having on their lives. I am particulary interested in recruiting participants who are 16-19, if anyone is willing to share this survey with this age group - it will be very helpful. http://tinyurl.com/UNENET2014 It is also available on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/UNENET2014
Thanks for your feedback Andrew - I appreciate this. The Internet Addiction scale is validated with clinical samples and general population.
