Brad's note: I've downloaded a copy of this 80 page e-book and I'm looking into this as a possible resource for our face-to-face meeting.
Tech Addiction is proud to offer a new self-help treatment workbook for internet addiction, computer addiction, and video game addiction. Assess the extent of your difficulties, develop realistic goals for improvement, and learn dozens of specific tips and strategies to regain control over your life.
This treatment program was developed by Clinical Psychologist Brent Conrad who specializes in helping those who have developed unhealthy and excessive "tech" habits - otherwise known as addictions to computers, the internet, or video games.
Are you spending hours online everyday?
Do others complain about how much time you spend on the internet?
Are your late night gaming sessions causing you to be tired the next day?
Is your computer use leading to poor school or work performance?
Do you spend less time with your family and friends because of the internet or video games?
Do you feel guilty, frustrated, or embarrassed by how much of your time goes to computers or video games?
If so, you need to ask yourself if this is really the life you want to be living. Are you willing to potentially sacrifice your relationships, your education, your health, and/or your career so that you can continue your current pattern of use? The Computer, Internet, and Video game Addiction Workbook was designed for the thousands of people who are ready to develop healthier online behaviors and video game habits.

The question is....will you be able/courageous/adult enough to sacrifice that which merely pleases you...for that which will truly fulfill you? That is the question of personal growth.

It most definitely is worth getting. This is a cognitive-behavioural workbook. It starts with a personal assessment of your current Internet usage, including gaming, auction sites, porn, social networking etc., then challenges us to consider the impact this is having on our lives. It goes on to get us out of maladaptive Internet usage patterns and into healthy relationships with people who will hold us accountable to the positive choices we are now making. See why I want to use it for the new face-to-face meeting? Check it out today!

Hey Johanna, Welcome to OLGA. Go here to get a sponsor/be a sponsor ---- the back bone of your success, as you know - Get a Sponsor/Be a Sponsor Liz

Hi Brad, After reading this book, what did you learn about gaming addiction that you did not know about before? Liz
Liz Woolley
I also need a sponsor to keep me busy when I feel the need to spend another ten hours in front f my computer...
I would agree, it is worth the purchase price.
Thx
Huh?
LaurelS9, the post that was just above yours came from somebody who joins only to do advertising or spamming, in this case for essay writing. However, I have done a quick ban of the user and reported abuse on the post so it is now only visible to administrators. We unfortunately get that behaviour here sometimes although I sometimes wonder if it is really worth it for them since I, or another moderator or administrator, usually remove those posts quite quickly.

I edited the thread entry. This is obviously not someone interested in our mission.

I had moved that reply (or one very similar to it) to the recycle bin this afternoon, and also one with an embedded link to a porn site that we had somehow missed a few months ago. Leaving them in place with the links edited out is just confusing. They are spam.

Hello Dine, It depends who you are talking to. Liz

I bought this online "workbook". Especially for anyone needing a kick-start to quit gaming I would highly recommend it. You have to be in a place to critically evaluate your gaming, though. But that can be said about any program. the book is good because it is not judgmental or preachy.
It goes over the nature of the game addiction, gets you to be critical and self evaluate your behavior.... looking at positive and negatives of gaming, the personal impact on your life, etc.
Its all very active, and you write all your responses. Gets you to log your activities, identify goals, assess your habits, mindsets... has templates for doing so, provides strategies. Its and easy read, simply laid out, quick to do (maybe a night for the fill-in-the-blanks).
Again, overall I would recommend it. One more tool in the tool-box.
For all the time and money spent on gaming, why not 15 or 20 bucks to get your life back?

well...
for people who aren't addicts, and can "learn" to behave themselves, my hat is off to them.
step 11 says we expand our conscience contact with HP
so if the book teaches that it, could be a good thing,
but as a meeting format?
how does that let the meeting "keep it simple"?
especially for a new comer, are we showing steps or a long book of fixing a life.
(and between me and you the writer of the book probably couldn't fix my life/routine anyway, i have gone to experts before...)
point is, good luck with that, and i think i will try other stuff...

God helps those who help themselves... thats the old saying, right?
We've all, at some point, made our own personal decision to come here to OLGA, right?
Hirshthg, I'm not saying the book is for everyone, but as a gaming addict, and someone who has tried to quit for years, I thought the workbook was well put together.
I dont know what youre comparing, here. The 12 steps aren't an overnight process. And I'd take either if they could fix my life. :)
As I said before, Its a "workbook" and should only take a night, maybe two, to complete. It's focused only on Gaming. By saying "the writer of the book probably couldn't fix my life anyway", I think you're looking at it in the wrong way. NO ONE can fix your life. You have to do it yourself.
The trouble I have had personally is that there are very few trained psychologists who understand and specialize in treating computer addictions. I couldnt find one locally, and I'm not flying across the country to meet one. I dont have that kind of money.
The book is a cheap option to start with. It makes you take a long, hard look at your gaming. A lot of people need to do this introspection first, then they can begin to start a treatment.
It has some solid cognitive/behavioral tools to begin dealing with gaming addiction.
As for your comment on "for people who aren't addicts, and can "learn" to behave themselves"..
maybe I'll blog about it or something. I wont address it here and hijack this post on a philosophical discussion. But addicts MUST LEARN to control themselves. And learn new, fulfilling behavior.
-- There Is No Spoon --
ok here was the point i am hitting on,
what basic format do we have for the f2f meetings?
is it simple as a 15 min read?
or a 2 day program?
"Hirshthg, I'm not saying the book is for everyone"
you started out saying it could be a possible resource for our face-to-face meeting. that means we tell everyone, "here is something we recommend"
"I don't know what your are comparing, here. The 12 steps aren't an overnight process."
well they are simple. very simple. made to explain to a addict who isn't even detoxed yet.
is the book that simple?
yes the steps are somewhat long, but they are very doable and they are universal.
"But addicts MUST LEARN to control themselves. And learn new, fulfilling behavior."
as you can see, i love a good blog, please send me a link, and we can talk there about the first step...

For the record, the workbook and the 12 steps are completely different in their process, and nature.

Hirshthg,
You are quoting someone else. I am not bgh. I never said it was a resource for a face to face meeting. Please re-read my posts.
There were at least 2 OLGA members in this thread who wanted to know what this book was about, and if it was any good.
I have read it, worked through it, and thought it was good. So I'm telling them, and anyone else who's curious.
-- There Is No Spoon --
lol my bad:)
mixing up people
but all of my posts where quotes of bgh, exsept for the point that addicts need to learn to control themselves.
i don't think we can learn that.
i think we really do need a "emotional displacement",
and that is a tedious point to discuses somewhere else:)
