I also have A.D.D. so it is unrealistic for me to try (again) to be an organizer.
If anyone knows of recovery meetings in or near Portland, Oregon, I would be greatly appreciative. It is important thatI attend some meetings in-person. Meeting online jusn't will not cut it for me, personally.
Thanks for reading.
I find that face-to-face meetings from other fellowships help. There aren't that many olga face to face meetings round my area so I need to attend those as well as the online ones.
I am new to olga and need to know where to start i live in tualatin oregon and am looking for somewhere to start looking for a face to face meeting i guess
Hi brett and welcome to Olga. Face to face meetings for gaming are kind of hard to find, but some go to Narcotics Anonymous, as they don't ask what your drug of choice is. A good place to start, however, is right here. Read posts in the Gamers section and post in the "I need help for gamers" forum, starting a new topic. Start with telling your story to receive feedback and support. Spend as much time as you can just reading posts. There's so much helpful information here. We've all been through it and understand where you're coming from. Quitting gaming is hard, but know you're not alone here. Good luck to you.
Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending. ~Maria Robinson
I just joined olga today and I would like to attend a support group specifically for quitting gaming, but I cant seem to find anything in the Portland/Vancouver area. I don't know how I would feel about trying to explain my gaming addiction in an AA or NA meeting, but I really need face to face meetings. I spend a lot of time chatting when I game and I'd like to get away from that. I am not a fan of skype either.
I would definitely be willing to organize a group to meet in June if a few people are interested. Im thinking an outdoor location would be ideal. Post here or message me
Hey Casual, thats great that you're working to start F2F meets in the PDX area. Hope you can get it going!
I was gonna say, short of that, that you can go to a NA meeting and share about when you "acted up". this means when you gamed to you and sounds like when you used to them, so it translates fine. The dopamine effect of gaming is similar to the dopamine effect of many drugs, so its the closest to OLGA in practical sense. NA folks are used to folks coming from a wide variety of substances and gaming is one of them.
BUT even better would be for you to get the face to face going for the PDX folks. If I ever move back home I'd get involved there myself!-) Cheer mate!-)
OLGA Home Page: "We advocate and provide a 12-Step Program of recovery. For those who are interested in a formalized meeting approach, we provide both a traditional 12-step program and a modified program for atheists and agnostics." I advocate and use the 12 steps programs, which have helped tens of millions of addicts of all kinds recover.
PDX ftw
Has there been any luck getting a face to face meeting going in the Portland area? I would be happy to help in any way that I can. I am brand new to OLGA, but I would really like to discuss this problem with people who actually get it.
add me on Facebook, Tyler Whitney.
hey PDXers. Tybo I got your PM.
Im from OR but been gone since 2004. I posted here in support of y'all.
I'm all the way across the country now in Raliegh, NC. The F2F Im trying to get going is in Raleigh, NC. I understand the confusion, I used to work at the Safeway in Raleigh, suburb of PDX, hehe.
I think mudfud, the author Andrew Doan, has church based 12 steps in portland.
If not your thing then the several of you here should share info in this thread and make a date to meet at some diner somewhere or something, to see each others faces. Bring your calendars and make a meeting date for that week. Or something like that maybe? If anyone above has a meeting spot within their influence or awareness please post it here for the group to get started.
Best recovery wishes folks. You can do it. Just do it!-)

Greetings PDXers
I'm adding my name to the Portland OR folks. I don't know much about AA/NA/GA, but I know that I'm thirteen days sober and I need to hold a 30-day chip in my pocket that was given to me by someone who knows about addiction. Maybe I've seen too many movies, but I think that it (along with everything else that comes with it) would help me a great deal.
Lessisntpossible
lessisntpossible No games since April 1st, 2013. Earliest addictive behavior that I recognize in hindsight: 1990ish. Longest run sober: 2-3 years, until the thoughts of "maybe I can be moderate now" creep in.
Howdy Portlandia...
I'd love to find a local and/or help start a Face-to-Face OLGA meeting. (Thanks, Bebetterhusband, for your recommendation of Andrew Doan's groups. Here is his website, all: http://www.hooked-on-games.com). For those interested, his Christian-based Celebrate Recovery program does have 4 meetings around the Portland/Vancouver area... website: http://crgroups.info.)
I myself would prefer a non-specific 12-step group. If it's cool, I will message you all to see if anyone is game. (Hah... that was an unintended pun.)
cheers,
j
I'm 2 hours south of Portland, still not gaming. If anyone interested in 12 step model who is closer to me would like to meet or chat, PM me. I can be hard to catch as I don't spend a ton of time online at the site.
Cheers, Desire to Stop
ALL quoted text (unless otherwise stated) comes from the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous (with wording sometimes changed only to make it more relevant for gaming addiction). I will include page numbers.
Hoping & praying for a measure of recovery for all of us today.
New here and looking to join a face to face meeting. Do we have one established? If not, I'll help organize.
I am sorry I lost touch with this message board so long ago. I had no idea we had so many replies. I lost my old email addresses and lost track of everything.
I have recently quit gaming again, but of couse I still have addictive urges, I try to replace the behavior with other things, like TV and general internet binging. If anyone is still out there, please try to reach me through here and propose more ways for us all to comunicate and hopefully meet in Portland. For now, I do not drive, but I can get to pretty much anywhere IN Portland.
Sorry and thank you again. :)
Marcus.
Send private messages, so that the message board notifies us that others are interested. I never got notices about any of the replies. :(
I go to an AA meeting, and I don't say "I'm a gaming addict" and then try to explain. I just say "I'm an addict from another program" and then I can listen to people and they aren't distracted by something they don't understand.
Face-to-face meetings are important for me, because at those meetings I meet people who have 20 years of sobriety. These people are different from people like me who have only been sober a couple of years. Very different. There is a lot to learn from them.
I still go to online meetings for gaming addiction because that's my specific issue. Both help me but in different ways.
I am a recovering computer game and gambling addict. My recovery birthday: On May 6, 2012 I quit games and began working a program of recovery through OLGA No computer games or slot games for me since December 12, 2012. No solitaire games with real cards since June 2013.
In the meantime, I'd be happy to make a fcebook group page for Portland Online Addiction Recovery. I would make it closed or private, if that's what people would prefer. That way, new and old members can be notified of how must interest we have, currently. And we could focus on meeting in both OLGA and non-OLGA settings (like AA and NA.)
If it's of any help, I live in SE Portland and I attend school in N. Portland, so depending on others' locations / I can meet amost anywhere in Portland, dependig on the time, etc.
Anyone know if OLGA is still planning on doing a F2F meeting?
Or has that project been abandoned?
Thanks.
Are you talking about Portland? I don't think OLGA organizes meetings in Portland. We have to do it ourselves, and for a while now, it seems not enough people have logged in often enough to start a consistent conversation about it. I offered to start a facebook group or something similar, in order for Porltand people in recovery to start to get in touch and ultimately have real meetings.
We could meet at Gamblers Anonymous meetings. They are open to us.
