Question: Why play video games?

If video games will no longer be used to satisfy one's needs, then why play them anymore, at all? To kill some time for instant pleasure? What purpose do they serve besides this? Training simulations for real life?

For the people that play games in moderation, why do they play games at all? What do they seek from playing games, if anything? If playing games in moderation is good for their life, why is that the case? How does gaming help them to live a good life?

-------------------

These are the questions I'll start with here. The next notion I'll add is the possibility that the people that play games in moderation may play games for partial fulfilment of their needs and they know exactly when to stop gaming, and they do just that with little to no fuss. But then, why turn to video games in the first place?

I accept Christian teaching.

Why are you asking this?

Hi Pkbys.  I'm not really sure why you're asking this question on a website that is for gaming addicts who need to quit playing all video games.  For us it doesn't really matter why anybody plays video games.  All that matters to us is NOT playing.  If you have questions relating to gaming addiction, those are the questions you need to be asking here.  Questions that concern people who can moderate their gaming are irrelevant here.

Why play video games?

My personal observation is that there are games that drone on and on and diminish an individual's abilities to meet life's challenges but there are other games that enhance a person's abilities.  My husband became addicted to a multiplayer 24/7 game and the end result was that he almost lost everything including me.  It decreased his attention span, his patience, and his abilities to function as a normal human being.  On the other hand I will admit to enjoying several of the games that Fallen Tree puts out.  One major difference is that the games I play are puzzles that challenge my mind.  It gives my abilities a "tune up" that college once did.  There is little social interaction so it could never act as a substitute for real people.  It also helped me when I was going through the problems with my husband.  I could play something that I could control and I will admit being on the world leaderboard as one of the top players on High Rise Heros helped when I was feeling like such a fool in my real life.  It also let me know that my mental abilities were coming back after I lost most of them while on Statin drugs. The games provide the same relaxation that taking math courses did in college, my major didn't require much math but I took the courses as electives.
