My son is reaching the boredom stage after his gaming was taken away. He's 21 no job. Obviously I am encouraging him to look for work. He chats to friends of which he has quite a few. Otherwise he watches films does quizzes that kind of thing. But he is still very bored without Dota. He can't play football (previously met friends to do this) because of the lockdown. He sometimes helps with things round house if I ask. Still gets angry at times.
my question really is - is boredom ok? I don't really want to be suggesting too much to him as our dynamic is That he tends to dismiss anything I suggest. He won't exercise! Do I just leave him to it?

Yes my son would NOT take any suggestions from me. Anything I suggested he would not do on principle.
I think from boredom, comes creativity. So it's fine to leave him bored, but just keep an eye on him.
Perhaps you can ask open questions such as what did you used to do before the game, only if you think it could help
Try to keep him helping around the home as much as possible.
Try to get him to cook the family a full meal from scratch. Good sense of achievement.
Leave art materials around so he can experiement if it takes his fancy
Does he have old toys around the place. Perhaps get him to sort through stuff that can be sold on or got rid of. he may end up playing with them...all good. It will also make him think about times gone by and get perspective
