My SO is addicted to Evony. He uses his phone so it's never away from him. I'm trying to understand it more before I talk to him. He is high-ranking: a king? He says that there's very little cost because he does lots of farming but I've noticed some things not adding up in our finances and wondered if he could be spending significant money on the game.
Is it possible to do well in Evony without paying lots of money?
How much could he be spending?
What's the reality here re our money? I don't like not trusting him.

Welcome Fern
If you want to question about Evony in particular you need to talk to people who know the game. i suggest you ask on the reddit forum.
Some members here report their spouses spending many thousands of dollars on stuff in game, when they cannot afford to. You need to sort this out now.
Here is a thread which may give you some ideas on this topic

Over the past several years, my wife has spent tens of thousands on various games. If I add my latest find she is approaching $35,000 to $40,000. Not sure if I can take this anymore.
Hi game7ot
It makes no sense that so much money is wasted ... thats the baffling nature of addiction and why it makes us feel so disturbed

There is no way to get any kind of power unless you spend money. Im guily of it. I am K35 with 1 Billion power which isnt big at all and i probably spend 400-600 a month on this stupid game. anybody above K30 is spending
My husband is an addict to this game since about a year and a half, he hasn't spent a penny on this game YET, however, he spends enormous amounts of time on this stupid game with a porn name... He's on that game every hour of the day doing "something." Whether he's in the toilet, or a theme park, anywhere, it doesn't matter... He MUST be on it. It is a time consuming game and I barely understand it. The graphics on it are primitive, not that great TBH. I know that it requires money to be spent in order to get stonger OR lots and lots of time to move ahead. However, there comes a time when the time put in won't be enough and money will need to be spent to make any progress. All of the big honchos in that game have spent lots of $$$$ to be in the position they are in. This game is "pay to win" and I cannot believe how many people fall for this. These people are either rich or have an immense amount of debt paying for this game. No married man or woman with a family and kids should be on this game IMO. Because it is extremely addicting and time consuming. It claims to have historical facts but a lot of it is FAKE. From what I've seen on the chats on this game, plenty of married people on it jabbering with each other, neglecting their siginificant other, children, jobs, or REAL life duties. It is sickening to see... Feels like a demon in my house honestly. If your wife or husband playis this game, there is NOTHING you can say to them to change their mind about their gaming, it is already in their DNA. Furthermore they become blinded-brainwashed by the mental poisoning of game that only grows and grows each day/hour they spend on it. It is a disease that changes personality, and decreases intimacy in a relationship because all of the pleasure buttons in the brain are redirected into this game. My best advise to you is to focus on Y.O.U.R.S.E.L.F. This gaming crap is a one-sided SELFISH behavior in your spouse. Believe that because it is all it is... They are focusing on what makes THEM feel good. This is not about US, this is about ME and what I need in the moment. I also recommend you PRAY about it. Everything happens for a reason. They will need to face their addiction at some point in life or afterlife, but that is out of your hands and control. Each person needs to be responsible for their own behavior. You can try to distract them with together activities, but that can only go so far. I feel defeated at times, but prayer and daily devotionals lift me up at least temporarily as of current. This is my daily battle.
