Jack Thompson gets Alabama law liscense revoked

cube.ign.com/articles/668/668344p1.html

Quote:November 21, 2005- Controversial Miami-based attorney Jack Thompson has been removed from a lawsuit filed by the families of two slain police officers and a police dispatcher against Sony, Rockstar Games, and game retailers. Furthermore, the judge in the case revoked Thompson's license to practice law in the state of Alabama citing Thompson's behavior as the cause of the sanction.

In our previous coverage of the trial, we reported that Thompson had voluntarily withdrawn from the case because he felt that the "other side [meaning the trial defendents] wants to make me the issue." However, Judge Moore, the case's presiding jurist, issued a stinging 18 page report in which the judge rejected Thompson's claim of voluntary removal and stated that Thompson was effectively thrown off of the case for actions "before this Court [that] suggest that he is unable to conduct himself in a manner befitting practice in this state." Furthermore, Moore has referred Thompson's conduct to Disciplinary Commission of the Alabama Bar for "appropriate action." Such actions could potentially include complete permanent disbarrment from the practice of law in the state of Alabama.

The removal of Thompson from the case does not necessarily represent the end of the trial as his long-time associate Ray Reiser will assume the role of lead counsel for the case's plaintiffs.

Not one to take such things lying down, Thompson fired back at Judge Moore by claiming the the judge has "has violated... The Alabama Canons of Judicial Ethics by his unfortunate, improper, and prejudicial acts in this case, at the expense of three bereaved Alabama families."

We will continue to keep you informed on the status of this case as developments warrant.

Nice to see this nutbar losing his liscense to practice law in Alabama. Though he still can practice law in other states such as Florida. Enrages me to see him accusing a judge of breaching ethics, while he himself is rather unethical.

I mean the guy puts out "a modest proposal" stating that he'll give $10,000 to the charity of Rockstar Games' choice if someone makes a violent game where someone kills the president of Rockstar. Someone does make said game, and Jack pretty much turns and says "Sorry. Not doing it".

So the makers of the highly successful gaming-related webcomic Penny Arcade emails him and states that they make well over half a mil each year with their Childs Play charity and then gives $10,000 to charity with the words "Because Jack Thompson Won't" written on the check. And what does Jack do? Call for the arrest of the individuals claiming character asassination and harassment.

Re: Jack Thompson gets Alabama law liscense revoked

I am getting caught up, from my week away.

I did not know this happened. Jack does have a way of getting people's defenses up.

I did purchase his book, Out of Harms Way, and read about where he is coming from. I wish I could have read before he represented me.

I myself, can only applaud what he is trying to do. He is the ONLY lawyer, that I know of, who knows about the dark side of gaming. When I was "considering" suing SOE, I talked to several lawyers. They had no idea what I was even talking about.

Here is the link to his book on Amazon.com -

He needs to tone down, so he can get the real point across!

Dark side? No offense, but it's no more "dark" than the motion picture or music industry. The ratings on the box are there for a reason. Games rated M and AO are intended and marketed for adults and adults alone. And parents need to realize this. As for kids buying them games themselves, I'm totally not against laws forbidding sales of these games to minors, the same way a movie theatre can't let kids into an R or NC17 movie.

The thing that irks me about Thompson is that he wants to completely make these games unavailable for everybody including adults. And I see this as blatant censorship.

Now, me personally, I'm not a big fan of games like GTA. Stuff like Sonic the Hedgehog or Mario is more my speed. But if an adult wants to play a game like this, let them.
