I just wanted to respond to this post, locked and stickied:

I'm not exactly sure of the context you're stating it in here...but I am aware of the context it is used in for AA, NA, etc.

And I'm sure people not aware of 12 step programs might find that statement confusing, or even almost cult-like.

And what it means for 12 step groups, (in a nutshell) is that people do not speak for AA, NA, etc. You can't have the California meetings of AA saying X, Y and Z...and the New York meetings of AA saying, A, B and C.

There might be minor differences from meeting to meeting, but primarily all meetings are pretty much the same.

There may be minor changes that occur over time with AA, NA etc, or books, pamphlets, etc. provided by AA, NA, etc...but those are discussed over an elected counsel and go through a ton of review before they're labeled as AA, NA, etc. literature.

So if you're saying that in speaking about the group specifically...then that is absolutely correct. However individual members in AA, NA, etc are always more than welcome to speak of their opinions, beliefs, etc...as long as they're not identifying them as AA, NA, etc beliefs when they are not.

So once again in a nutshell, all that means (when applied by AA, NA, etc) is that individuals can say whatever they like...speaking for themselves. And that people who belong to the group should not speak for AA, NA, etc. in any medium, unless they're absolutely sure that what they're representing is what AA, NA, etc. is/are/would state/etc.
