Part of me likes Jack Thompson, part of me thinks he is as addicted to his crusade as gamers are as addicted to their games. He makes no bones about expressing his disdain for gamers, but having been a part of this site for 3 years, I know too well how gamers can waste so much time and energy arguing or argument's sake through these elaborate, ideological argument chains about the most stupid, idiotic, useless points. I know, because I used to spend hours writing stupid elaborate arguments about in-game things that now, I can't believe I wasted my valuable time with. I'm a gamer, but let's face it, hard core gamers are some of the most stubborn, obnoxious people WHEN they want to be. Disclaimer: not all are... be most have their moments! People are more outspoken when they can hide in their own anonymity.
Plus, many people like to debate and argue...period. For those who don't know, there are whole message boards called 'flame boards', setup for the sole purpose of arguing about things that have little meaning to the real world. I too spent my share of time on those and now even the thought of reading some post by some self-important know it all wanna-be debator makes my skin crawl.
Still, I think Jack Thompson walks a fine line between First Amendment rights and censorship and he isn't interested in listening to gamers who disagree with him.
Jack Thompson was the Lawyer who offered to represent me if I chose to sue SOE.
He is the only lawyer educated enough in what is "really" happening with computer/video games, to have the ability to make that offer. Like most "professionals", attorneys don't know what is really going on in the gaming world, either. So, I give him koodos for that.
As for the way he deals with people, well.....he is not representing me.
Wow, my my... that article wasn't censored out! woo hoo!
I've never heard of this guy neither. Strange character. You'd think lawyers would know about falacies. He was probably offended? At first glance based on what I read in that article...this guy doesn't seem all that bright. But who knows... lol not me!
I'd never heard of Jack Thompson.
But obviously others have.
Wilkipedia has a nice online dictionary entry on him:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jac...(attorney)
