The article at http://www.shacknews.com/...">http://www.shacknews.com/featuredarticle.x?id=1047]http://www.shacknews.... (WARNING: There are several video game related graphics) says:
Quote:Ensemble has been wanting to make an MMO for a long time. That was in production for a long time. The Halo IP was a great IP to launch an MMO with. Microsoft... hasn't had the best track record with those.
And we worked on it for a long time--we had staffed up an almost-40 person team. And then there was some reorganization at Microsoft, and the new bosses thought it wasn't the best idea anymore. It had actually been green-lit, and then it got cancelled after that.
Considering how popular WoW is and how much money it is making (i.e., in the billions), one might think that MMO's are excellent ways to make money. However, as Microsoft's decision shows, they do not think so, at least in this one case. I know very little about this issue but it may be a sign that the MMO market, with their often addictive games, is now becoming somewhat saturated.

On a related note, the article Tabula Rasa To Shut Down (warning: there is one game related advertisement) briefly discusses the failure of that MMO.

Tabula Rasa was my last MMO addiction. In fact, my subscription doesn't expire until January 2009. I feel a strange sadness. Weird huh? I lost Earth and Beyond a few years ago. I think I need grief counselling. ;)
