Intervention

On the A&E series "Intervention" they will be dealing with video game addiction, in an upcoming episode, scheduled to air this Sunday (1/28/07) at 10PM CST, and Monday 2 AM CST. I have not seen this episode (have never actually watched this series), so I don't know whether it is a good show, or what viewpoint they will take on the whole gaming addiction question, but I thought I would post the info if anyone is interested.

Re: Intervention

Thanks to you Gamersmom for giving this information. I will be sure to record it. The show usually shows the worst side ever imaginable that a drug or addiction can have. I can't even watch the ones that show my drugs of choice for longer than four or five minutes because they are so real, and it has been eight years since I used drugs or drank. I expect it will be a very moving, extremely accurate episode and I encourage all here to watch it. Gamelessly

I remember when they came asking for volunteers. I guess they found one.

Re: Intervention

Hubby, daughter and I watched it last night. The guy was 21+ and addicted to console video games. His "friend", who happened to be a girl (they were developing stronger feelings for one another) was the catalyst for getting him to accept therapy. He went to and Indian wilderness setting in AZ for 42 days. The guy had been left by his mother when she decided to pursue school and career over family. He tried suicide at 14. I got the impression that he'd graduated college but was working very part-time and pretty much living off his father. At the end of the program, they said he came back from therapy having a much better relationship with his family BUT went back to gaming.

Re: Intervention

To a small extent, I felt the program perpetuated the myth that only kids trying to escape from some major life trauma get addicted to games.

Oh man, those eyes! They were so big, and wild! Is that what people look like when they raid at highlevels in Wow? I used to just sit in a comatose state, no matter what happened.

I know that I could not look people in the eyes any longer, as I did not feel content with myself...

I did not see the program but I believe somebody said he was a "console" gamer. Different kind of gaming entirely than like and EQ or WoW. It is all based on fast twitch reaction times etc. Things may get a little hectic at times in MMORPG's but for the most part it is a very controlled environment. The PVP stuff may be different, but I never played PVP so I don't know.

It does not matter really, I used to play SNES emulator games, if it numbs the brain and emotions, it "does the job"

Re: Intervention

PVP floods your body with adrenalin so you can't sleep at night or become aggressive requiring a downtime to get back to normal. And if you happen to be having a bad night and get killed a bunch of times, it's even that much more aggravating with more adrenalin and it takes even longer to get back to normal. Caustic. Ron
